World Bank Income Groups

The World Bank classifies every country by Gross National Income (GNI) per capita. These four groups cut across regions — a high-income country can be in any region. The thresholds are updated annually.

How the thresholds work: The World Bank uses the Atlas method to compute GNI per capita in current US dollars. As of the 2023 fiscal year: Low income is below $1,136; Lower-middle $1,136–$4,465; Upper-middle $4,466–$13,845; High income above $13,845. Many countries move between groups as their economies grow or contract.
